One of the challenges that WordPress developers face is making themes and plugins work with different versions of WordPress and PHP. Since we launched Studio, a free and open-source app for local website development, last year, we have received requests to add flexibility in version selection, and now you can do it

Starting today, Studio now offers the option to choose WordPress and PHP versions, allowing you to customize your development and testing environment more efficiently.

How to choose the WordPress and PHP versions in Studio

You can choose the desired version in 2 main cases:

1. When creating a new website

Previously, you had to create the website with default settings first and then change the version later. But now, you can choose the desired version from the beginning, making the settings align with your needs right from the start.

2. For existing websites

If you want to test the website with an older version of WordPress or change the PHP version, you can go to Site Settings and select the desired version.

Supports a wider variety of versions.

Websites created with Studio now support:

• WordPress: From version 5.9 onwards (including beta versions)
• PHP: From version 7.4 to 8.4

Supporting a wider version allows you to:

• Test plugins and themes with multiple versions of WordPress.
• Support for old websites that have not yet been able to upgrade to the latest version.
• Check backward compatibility to support users who use the older version.
• Try the beta version to prepare for future updates.

You can use this feature starting today in Studio version 1.3.8 and above.
